Forcing

Making a plant flower earlier than it naturally would, by controlling cold, warmth and light.

Also: forcing bulbs

Forcing tricks a plant into flowering out of season. Spring bulbs are the usual subject. Hyacinths, tulips and daffodils are given some weeks of cold and dark so they behave as if winter has passed, then brought into warmth and light, where they bloom indoors in midwinter. Paperwhite narcissi and amaryllis need no cold and are the easiest. Branches of forsythia, cherry and quince can be forced too, by cutting them in late winter and standing them in water indoors.
