Phool

How complete is Phool?

There are roughly 300,000 kinds of flowering plant, and nobody has counted the world's flower customs. Phool will never hold all of them, so it shows its working.

Where the list comes from

Three sources. Our own lists of the flowers each country is known for (national flowers, well-loved wildflowers, sacred and festival flowers), of flower decorations and customs, and of gardens, markets and bloom sites. Every plant that has both a Plants of the World Online record and a well-developed English Wikipedia article, from which the writer keeps those known for their flowers. And every botanical garden on Wikidata with an English Wikipedia article.

Country overviews written: 75 of 175. Photos: 1,039 of 1,056 pages have a free-licence photo; the rest show a drawn flower until one is found.

New pages are written every day, best documented first, with each continent taking its turn. Wikidata is re-read every week for subjects added since.

What is missing

Flowers and customs with no English Wikipedia article are not here yet. That leaves out a great many local flowers and village customs, and it favours countries that are well covered in English. Plants known mainly for timber, fruit or grain are left out on purpose. By region so far: Asia 420, Europe 202, North America 127, Africa 84, Oceania 36, South America 32.

Countries with the fewest pages so far: Antigua and Barbuda (0), Benin (0), Burkina Faso (0), Burundi (0), Central African Republic (0), Chad (0), Democratic Republic of the Congo (0), Djibouti (0), Equatorial Guinea (0), Gambia (0), Guinea-Bissau (0), Ivory Coast (0), Kiribati (0), Kosovo (0), Kuwait (0), Liberia (0), Liechtenstein (0), Luxembourg (0), Mali (0), Marshall Islands (0).

If you know a flower, a custom or a garden we should add, write to phool@cleartrust.cc.

The weekly bunch

Every Monday: what is in bloom, the flower festivals of the week, seven flowers you may not know and one tradition explained.
