Umbel
A flower cluster whose stalks all spring from one point, like the ribs of an umbrella.
In an umbel the flower stalks start from the same spot at the top of the stem and spread out, giving a flat or rounded head. Ornamental alliums make a tight globe. Agapanthus makes a loose one. In the carrot family the umbels are compound: each rib carries a smaller umbel of its own, as in dill, fennel and Queen Anne's lace. Florists value these lacy heads as light filler between heavier flowers.
