Jinhae Gunhangje
Korea's largest cherry blossom festival, in a naval port town lined with hundreds of thousands of trees.
What happens
Jinhae, a district of Changwon on the south coast of Korea, is home to the country's naval academy and to a great many cherry trees. The festival, Gunhangje, began as a memorial to Admiral Yi Sun-sin and now draws visitors for the blossom. For about ten days around the start of April people walk beneath the trees along the Yeojwacheon stream and beside the railway line at Gyeonghwa station, where petals fall on the tracks. The naval base opens its gates and there are military band parades.
The flowers
Also part of it, and being written: Prunus × yedoensis (The main variety planted across the town.).
