What happens

Madeira's mild climate lets flowers from several continents grow side by side, and each spring Funchal holds a festival to show them. It runs for about three weeks, usually in May. On a Saturday morning thousands of children walk to the square in front of the city hall, each with one flower, and together build the Wall of Hope. The next afternoon a parade of floats and dancers in flower costumes moves along the seafront. Carpets of flowers are laid along the central avenue.

The flowers

Also part of it, and being written: Strelitzia reginae (Bird of paradise, a signature flower of the island.).
