Bloom seasons and flower fields
Jacaranda month in Buenos Aires
In November thousands of jacarandas flower along the avenues and plazas of Buenos Aires and carpet the pavements in violet.

What it is
The jacaranda is native to north-western Argentina and neighbouring countries, so in Buenos Aires it is a home-grown tree. Carlos Thays, the French-born landscape architect who directed the city's parks from the 1890s, planted it in great numbers, along with tipa trees and the pink-flowered palo borracho. There are well over ten thousand jacarandas in the city today. They flower through November, late spring in the south, before the leaves fill in. Plaza San Martín, Plaza Italia, the parks of Palermo, Avenida Figueroa Alcorta and Plaza de Mayo all have fine groups. The flowering is a marker of the year for porteños, the people of the city.
Before you go
- The second and third weeks of November are usually the peak.
- Walk from Plaza San Martín through Recoleta to the Palermo parks for a route of an hour or two.
- The Rosedal rose garden in Palermo flowers at the same time, so see both.
The flowers you will see
