What it is
Luoping is a farming county in the east of Yunnan province. In late winter its fields of rapeseed, grown for cooking oil, come into flower together, and the land turns yellow for as far as you can see. What makes it unusual is the setting. At Jinji, small cone-shaped limestone hills rise out of the flat yellow like islands. At Niujie, the fields are terraced in curved rings that follow the slope. Beekeepers bring their hives for the season and sell honey by the roadside. A local festival is held around the bloom, usually from February into March.
Before you go
