Aquatic plant
A plant that lives in water, rooted in mud with floating or raised leaves, or floating free.
Also: water plant, aquatic
Aquatic plants grow in ponds, lakes, slow rivers and wet fields. Water lilies root in the mud and float their leaves and flowers on the surface. The sacred lotus roots in mud too, but lifts its leaves and flowers well above the water on tall stalks, which is the easiest way to tell the two apart. Others float free, such as water hyacinth, which has pretty lilac flowers and is a serious weed of warm waterways around the world.
