Native
Describes a plant that occurs naturally in a region, without having been brought by people.
Also: indigenous plant
A native plant arrived and evolved in a place by natural means. It has long ties with the local insects, birds and soils. Marigolds are native to Mexico and Central America, tulips to Central Asia and nearby regions, and proteas to southern Africa, although all three are now grown far from home. Many gardeners choose natives because local pollinators use them and they often need less water and care than plants from other climates.
