Bedding plant
A plant raised in quantity and set out in beds for one season of display, then removed.
Also: bedding
Bedding plants are grown under cover, planted out when they are about to flower, and cleared away when the season ends. Most are annuals or tender perennials treated as annuals: petunias, marigolds, begonias, salvias, pansies, impatiens. Parks use them for blocks of colour and patterned displays, a style that became popular in 19th-century Europe. In the plains of North India, the bedding season is winter, when petunias, phlox, calendulas and dahlias fill gardens and roundabouts.
