Binomial name

The two-word scientific name of a species: the genus followed by the species word.

Also: scientific name, botanical name, Latin name

Every plant species has one accepted two-part name, used in every country. The first word is the genus, with a capital letter. The second marks the species, in lower case. Both are written in italics: Jasminum sambac for Arabian jasmine, Tagetes erecta for the African or Mexican marigold. The system was made standard by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. It avoids the confusion of common names, which change from place to place.
