Common name
The everyday name of a plant in a given language, as opposed to its scientific name.
Also: vernacular name
Common names are the ones people actually use: rose, marigold, genda, sakura. They are easy and full of local history, but they are not reliable guides. One plant can have many names, and one name can cover many plants. 'Jasmine' is used for several unrelated scented climbers. 'African marigold' comes from Mexico. 'Lily' is applied to water lilies, calla lilies and daylilies, none of which are true lilies. When it matters, check the scientific name.
