Disc floret
One of the tiny tubular flowers packed into the centre of a daisy-type head.
Also: disc flower
The yellow button in the middle of a daisy is made of disc florets. Each is a small tube with five teeth, holding its own stamens and pistil. They open in rings from the outside in, so the centre of a sunflower changes day by day. Disc florets do most of the seed-making: every sunflower seed comes from one. Some plants have only disc florets and no rays, such as tansy and the globe thistle.
