Ray floret
One of the strap-shaped outer flowers of a daisy-type head, which look like petals.
Also: ray flower
Each white 'petal' of a daisy is a complete tiny flower called a ray floret. Its petals are fused into one long strap. Ray florets ring the edge of the flower head and act as the signal to pollinators. Many are sterile and make no seed. Breeders have selected daisy-family plants whose disc florets have turned into ray florets, giving the full, shaggy heads of pompon dahlias, florists' chrysanthemums and African marigolds.
