Family

A large group of related genera that share basic features of flower and fruit.

Also: plant family

Plant families group genera with a common design. Family names end in -aceae. The daisy family, Asteraceae, has flower heads made of many florets. The orchid family, Orchidaceae, is one of the two largest, with flowers built on a plan of three sepals and three petals, one of them a lip. The rose family, Rosaceae, includes apples, cherries and strawberries as well as roses. Knowing the family often tells you how a flower is built and what it needs.
