Hanakotoba

The Japanese language of flowers, in which each flower carries a meaning or feeling.

Also: Japanese language of flowers

Hanakotoba means flower words. As in the Western language of flowers, each plant is linked to an idea, and the choice of flower in a gift, a poem or a drawing can add a layer of meaning. Cherry blossom suggests the brief beauty of life. The red spider lily, which flowers around the autumn equinox and is often seen near graves, is tied to parting and death. Meanings are often used in Japanese films, comics and animation.
