Hybrid
A plant with two different parents, usually different species or distinct cultivars.
Also: cross
A hybrid comes from crossing two unlike parents. It can happen in the wild where ranges meet, but most garden hybrids are made on purpose to combine traits, such as the colour of one parent and the hardiness of another. A multiplication sign in a name marks a hybrid, as in Magnolia × soulangeana. Hybrid tea roses, most garden tulips, lilies and nearly all florists' orchids are hybrids. Seed saved from a hybrid usually gives uneven offspring.
