Cultivar

A plant selected or bred by people for particular traits and kept true by careful propagation.

Also: cultivated variety

Cultivar is short for cultivated variety. It is a plant chosen for something useful or attractive, such as colour, scent, size or disease resistance, and then multiplied so that every plant is alike. Its name is written in single quotation marks with capital letters, after the scientific name: Rosa 'Peace', Narcissus 'Tête-à-tête'. Most cultivars are kept true by cuttings, grafting or division, because seed would give mixed results. Nearly every flower in a shop is a named cultivar.
