Propagation

Making new plants from existing ones, by seed or by pieces of the parent plant.

There are two broad ways to raise new plants. Seed gives offspring that vary. Vegetative methods use a part of the parent, and the new plant is a copy of it. These include cuttings, division of clumps, layering a stem into soil, grafting, and separating bulbs, corms and tubers. Orchids and many other commercial flowers are also multiplied in laboratories from tiny pieces of tissue, which is how millions of identical plants reach the market.
