Variety
A naturally occurring form within a species that differs in a steady way from the typical plant.
Also: var.
In botany, a variety is a wild population that differs a little from the rest of its species, perhaps in flower colour, hairiness or size, and passes that difference on. It is written after the species name with the abbreviation var. in between. In everyday use, people say 'variety' for any named garden plant, as in 'a new variety of rose'. Strictly, those bred or selected plants are cultivars. Both uses are common, so check which is meant.
