Petal
One of the coloured, leaf-like parts of a flower that surround its centre and draw in pollinators.
Also: corolla segment
Petals are modified leaves. Their job is to advertise: colour, pattern and often scent tell insects and birds where the nectar and pollen are. A wild rose has five petals, a poppy four or six, and many garden roses have dozens because breeders selected for extra ones. Petals are usually the part people eat, dry, string or scatter, as with rose petals at a wedding or marigold petals in a rangoli. Taken together, all the petals of one flower are called the corolla.
