Scent
The smell a flower gives off, made of light oils that evaporate into the air to attract pollinators.
Also: fragrance, perfume
Flower scent is a mix of volatile compounds, often dozens in one flower. It works as a long-distance signal, especially at night when colour is no use. Jasmine, tuberose, gardenia and frangipani are among the strongest. Not all scents are sweet: some arums and stapelias smell of carrion to attract flies. Many modern cut roses have little scent, because breeding for long vase life and tough petals has tended to reduce it. Perfumers capture scent by distillation or solvent extraction.
