Spathe

A single large bract that wraps or sits behind a spike of tiny flowers, as in an anthurium.

A spathe is one big bract shaped like a hood, a sheath or a flat shield. It belongs to plants of the arum family and to some palms. In an anthurium the glossy red heart is the spathe. In a peace lily it is the white sail, and in a calla lily the white funnel. The real flowers are very small and sit crowded on the finger-like spike in the middle, which is called the spadix.
