Spadix
A fleshy spike covered in very small flowers, usually partnered with a spathe.
The spadix is the thick central spike of an arum flower. Its surface is packed with tiny flowers that have no petals. In an anthurium it is the pale tail standing out from the red spathe. Some spadices warm up and give off strong smells to attract flies and beetles. The titan arum of Sumatra, which has one of the largest flowering structures of any plant, smells of rotting meat when its spadix heats.
