Spike
A flower cluster with stalkless flowers attached directly along one upright stem.
A spike looks like a raceme, but the flowers sit straight on the main stem with no stalks of their own. Gladiolus, lavender and tuberose carry spikes. They open from the bottom upwards, and this matters when buying cut flowers: a gladiolus stem with only the lowest one or two flowers open will go on opening in the vase for a week or more. In India, single tuberose flowers are plucked off the spike and strung into garlands.
