Parents' Day
Korean children pin a red carnation on the chest of each parent.

What happens
South Korea keeps 8 May as Parents' Day, which grew out of an earlier Mother's Day. The custom is to give each parent a red carnation, often a small corsage that is pinned to the chest and worn all day. Small children make theirs from paper at school. A week later, on 15 May, pupils give carnations to their teachers on Teachers' Day. Flower shops and street stalls sell carnation baskets through the first half of the month.
