What it is

Kings Park covers a hill beside the centre of Perth, with wide views over the Swan River. Most of it is native bushland. Within it, the Western Australian Botanic Garden gathers plants from across the state, arranged by region, so in a morning you can see species from the desert, the Kimberley and the south coast. In spring the beds are full of kangaroo paws, everlastings, banksias, wax flowers and boronias. A festival of wildflowers runs through September with guided walks and displays. A raised walkway passes through the treetops, and an old boab tree stands near the entrance.

Before you go

  • September is the peak. Free guided walks leave from the visitor centre.
  • Come early or late in the day for softer light and the river view.
  • Entry is free. Allow two to three hours.
