What it is
The trail to Sandakphu follows the Singalila ridge on the border of West Bengal and Nepal, starting near Manebhanjan, a short drive from Darjeeling. Sandakphu is the highest point in West Bengal. In April and May the forests along the ridge flower: red, pink and white rhododendrons, and tall magnolias with large pale blooms on bare branches. On clear mornings four of the world's highest mountains are in view, including Kangchenjunga and Everest. The walk takes four to six days, staying in simple lodges in ridge-top hamlets. The route passes through Singalila National Park, home of the red panda.
Before you go
- A registered guide is required inside the national park.
- Mornings are clearest. Cloud often builds by midday in spring.
- Nights are cold at altitude even in May. Pack for it.
