Conservatory
A glass building for displaying tender plants; at home, a glazed room attached to the house.
Also: glasshouse, palm house, orangery
A conservatory is a greenhouse meant for show. The great public ones were built in the 19th century, when iron and sheet glass made large clear spans possible and plant collectors were bringing palms, orchids and tree ferns back to cold countries. The Palm House at Kew is a famous survivor. The glasshouse at Lalbagh in Bengaluru was built in the same period. An orangery is an earlier form, with tall windows, built to keep citrus trees through winter.
