Botanical garden
A garden that keeps a labelled, documented collection of plants for study, conservation and public visits.
Also: botanic garden
A botanical garden is a living museum of plants. Each plant is labelled and recorded, and the collection supports research and teaching as well as pleasure. Many also bank seeds and grow threatened species. The botanical garden of Padua in Italy, founded in 1545, is still on its original site. Others of note include Kew in London, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Kirstenbosch in Cape Town and the Indian Botanic Garden near Kolkata with its great banyan.
