Herbarium
A collection of pressed, dried plant specimens kept on sheets with notes, for scientific reference.
A herbarium is a library of plants. Each specimen is pressed flat, dried and mounted on a sheet of paper with a label saying what it is, where and when it was collected and by whom. Kept dry and safe from insects, specimens last for centuries. Botanists use them to name plants, to describe new species and to track how ranges and flowering times have changed. Large herbaria, such as those at Kew and Paris, hold millions of sheets.
