Everlasting
A flower with dry, papery petals or bracts that keeps its colour and form when dried.
Also: everlasting flower, immortelle, strawflower
Everlastings feel papery even when fresh, because the showy parts hold very little water. They dry with almost no change. The strawflower, native to Australia, is the best known, with stiff bracts in yellow, pink, orange and red. Others are statice, globe amaranth, winged everlasting and pearly everlasting. Globe amaranth is a common garland flower in India and Southeast Asia for the same reason: it stays fresh-looking for days. Immortelle is a French name for such flowers.
