Floristry

The craft and trade of arranging cut flowers and foliage, and of selling them.

Also: floral design, flower arranging

Floristry covers everything done with cut flowers after they leave the farm: caring for them, designing with them and selling the result. Designers talk about form, line, colour, texture and proportion, and about mechanics, meaning the hidden supports that hold stems in place. Styles vary widely. European and American work has tended towards full, massed shapes. Japanese ikebana values line and empty space. South Asian work centres on stringing and weaving flowers without stems.
