National flower
A flower chosen to represent a country, state or region.
Also: floral emblem, state flower
Many countries have a flower as a symbol. Some are fixed by law or proclamation and are called floral emblems. Others rest only on custom. India's is the lotus. South Africa's is the king protea, Australia's the golden wattle and the United States' the rose. Japan has no legal national flower, but cherry blossom and chrysanthemum both serve. States, provinces and cities have their own emblems too, often a native wildflower, such as the waratah for New South Wales.
