Nectar guide
A pattern of lines, spots or colour on a flower that points pollinators towards the nectar.
Also: honey guide
Many flowers carry markings that lead a visitor to the centre. The dark lines on a pansy, the spots in a foxglove's throat and the yellow patch on an iris are nectar guides. Some guides are invisible to people. Bees can see ultraviolet light, and many flowers that look plain yellow to us, such as some sunflowers and marsh marigolds, show a dark ultraviolet bullseye to a bee. The guide saves the insect time, and so the flower is visited more.
