Pistil
The seed-making part at the centre of a flower: a stigma, a style and an ovary.
Also: carpel, female part
The pistil sits in the middle of most flowers. It has three sections. The stigma at the top catches pollen. The style is the neck below it. The ovary at the base holds the ovules, which become seeds once they are fertilised. A lily has one clear pistil with a three-lobed stigma. A buttercup or a strawberry flower has many small ones packed together. Botanists use the word carpel for the basic unit: a pistil may be one carpel or several joined.
