On 12 October hundreds of thousands of people in regional dress bring flowers to the Virgin in Zaragoza.

What happens

The feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, patron of Zaragoza and of Aragon, falls on 12 October. From early morning until evening, people file through the city to the square in front of the basilica, most of them in the traditional dress of Aragon or of their home region. Each brings flowers. In the square stands a tall frame with an image of the Virgin on top, and helpers set the bunches into it until it becomes a wide cloak of flowers. It stays in place for several days.
