Vietnamese Women's Day
On 20 October men and children in Vietnam give flowers to the women in their lives.
What happens
Vietnam has a women's day of its own on 20 October, the date on which the Vietnam Women's Union was founded in 1930. It is kept in addition to 8 March. Husbands, sons, pupils and colleagues give flowers to wives, mothers, teachers and co-workers, and offices hold small parties. Flower sellers set up along the pavements of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with wrapped bouquets, and prices rise for the day. Roses are the first choice, followed by lilies and sunflowers.
