Lalbagh and its Glass House flower shows
Bengaluru's historic botanical garden, with big flower shows around Republic Day and Independence Day.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for gardeners, florists, travellers and the curious.
What it is
Lalbagh was begun in the eighteenth century under Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan and later grew into a botanical garden with trees from around the world. At its heart is the Glass House, an iron and glass pavilion from the late nineteenth century inspired by London's Crystal Palace. Twice a year, in January and August, it hosts a flower show with a large themed structure built from many thousands of cut flowers, surrounded by displays of potted annuals. Outside show time the garden is a calm place of old trees, a lake, a rose garden and an ancient rock outcrop.
Before you go
- During the shows, weekday mornings are far less crowded than weekends.
- For a quiet walk, come early on a normal day when local walkers have the paths.
- Allow two hours or more. The garden is large.
The flowers you will see
Also part of it, and being written: Orchidaceae.
