Flower stalls of the Viktualienmarkt
Munich's daily open-air food market, with a section of florists selling seasonal bunches, wreaths and dried flowers.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for gardeners, florists, travellers and the curious.
What it is
The Viktualienmarkt has been Munich's main food market since 1807. It is a permanent open-air market of small huts and stands a few steps from Marienplatz, with a maypole and a beer garden in the middle. One section belongs to the florists. Their stock follows the Bavarian year closely: tulips and pussy willow before Easter, peonies and garden roses in June, sunflowers and dahlias in late summer, and in November and December a great many Advent wreaths, fir branches and dried arrangements. Munich households buy here for the table and for graves.
Before you go
- The market does not trade on Sundays or public holidays.
- Late November is the best time to see wreath making at the stalls.
- Stallholders do not like goods being handled. Point and ask.
