Charbagh
A Persian-style garden divided into four parts by paths or water channels that cross at the centre.
Also: chahar bagh, four-part garden
Charbagh means four gardens in Persian. A walled rectangle is split into quarters by raised walks and narrow water channels, with a pool, pavilion or tomb where they meet. The plan is often read as an image of paradise. It spread from Iran across Central Asia and was brought to India by the Mughals. The gardens of Humayun's Tomb in Delhi and of the Taj Mahal in Agra follow it, as do the terraced Mughal gardens of Kashmir.
