Focal flower
A large or striking flower that draws the eye first in an arrangement.
Also: face flower, feature flower
Florists sort their materials by the job each does. Focal flowers are the stars: big, bold or unusual blooms placed where the eye should rest. Roses, peonies, dahlias, lilies, sunflowers, proteas and large orchids are common choices. A design usually has only a few, set at slightly different heights and depths so they do not line up. Smaller flowers and foliage are then added around them to support and connect.
