Meadow
Open grassland rich in wildflowers, traditionally cut for hay once the flowers have seeded.
Also: wildflower meadow
A meadow is grass and flowers growing together. Traditional hay meadows are cut late in summer, after the plants have dropped seed, and the cuttings are taken away. This keeps the soil poor, which favours flowers over coarse grass. Such meadows have become rare in much of Europe. Many gardens and parks now sow meadow areas for pollinators. Mountain meadows are a different thing: natural grasslands above the trees, such as the Valley of Flowers in the Indian Himalaya.
