Grade
A quality class given to cut flowers, based mainly on stem length, head size and freedom from faults.
Also: grading
Before sale, flowers are sorted so that buyers know what they are getting without opening every box. Stem length is the main measure for roses, which are sold in steps of length in centimetres. Graders also look at the size and stage of the bud, straightness and strength of the stem, and any marks, pests or disease. Higher grades fetch higher prices. At large auctions, lots are inspected and described so they can be bought unseen.
