Stem
The stalk of a flower; in the trade, also the unit by which cut flowers are counted and priced.
In the flower trade, a stem means one cut flower with its stalk. Growers, wholesalers and florists count, price and order in stems. A recipe for a bouquet is written as so many stems of each kind. Length matters: longer stems of roses and many other flowers sell for more, because they suit tall arrangements and can always be cut shorter. A spray stem carries several smaller flowers on side branches, as in spray roses and spray chrysanthemums.
