Purple, white and yellow goblets that open in sun on lawns and in alpine meadows as the snow goes.

Grape hyacinth
Short spikes of tight blue beads, planted in ribbons under tulips and along paths.

Tulip
Bulb fields and park beds in spring, from the Netherlands and Istanbul to Srinagar. Wild tulips flower on Central Asian hills.

Persian buttercup
Tightly layered flowers like small peonies, grown in striped fields for the cut flower trade and in spring pots.

Freesia
A South African corm with a sweet, peppery scent. Common in florists' bunches and in mild-climate gardens in spring.
Cyclamen
Swept-back pink and white petals under trees from autumn to early spring, and in pots indoors through winter.

Amaryllis
A fat bulb that sends up huge red or striped trumpets. Grown indoors for winter in the north, outdoors in spring in the south.

Plum blossom
Scented pink and white flowers on bare branches in late winter. The first blossom of the year in China, Korea and Japan.
Mimosa (silver wattle)
Fluffy yellow balls on feathery grey leaves. Australian, but also the winter flower of the French and Italian Riviera.

Silk cotton tree (semal)
Big red cup flowers on a leafless, thorny tree at the end of the Indian winter. Birds crowd it for nectar.
Pink trumpet tree (tabebuia)
Pink flowers cover the bare crown in the dry season, in Central America and on avenues in Bengaluru.

Golden trumpet tree (yellow ipê)
A leafless tree turned solid yellow at the end of the dry season. A late winter sight in Brazilian towns.

Almond blossom
Pale pink blossom on bare orchards, early in the year, from Mallorca and Sicily to California and Kashmir.

Palash (flame of the forest)
Orange-red flowers on bare branches across the dry forests of central and eastern India, around the time of Holi.

Kachnar (orchid tree)
Pink, mauve or white orchid-like flowers on a small tree in north Indian streets and gardens. The buds are cooked.

Red flowers on whole Himalayan hillsides in spring. Nepal's national flower, and pressed into a drink in Uttarakhand.

Magnolia
Large pink and white goblets on bare branches in early spring, in gardens and city streets.

Peach blossom
Deep pink blossom in orchards and on cut branches. A spring and New Year symbol in China and Vietnam.

Apricot blossom
White to pale pink blossom in mountain valleys such as Ladakh and Hunza, where it marks the end of winter.

Redbud
Small magenta flowers straight off the bare twigs and trunk, along woodland edges in eastern North America.
Cherry blossom
Clouds of pale pink for a week or two. The front moves north through Japan from late March, with picnics under the trees.
Orange blossom
Small white waxy flowers with a heavy sweet scent, filling citrus towns such as Seville in spring.

Copper pod
Upright sprays of yellow flowers that carpet the pavement below. A common avenue tree in Indian and Southeast Asian cities.
Golden wattle
Australia's national flower: bright yellow balls at the end of winter. Wattle Day is the first of September.

Clusters of orange-red cups at the top of a tall tree. From tropical Africa, planted across warm cities.

Unscented yellow stars on green leafless stems, trained against walls and spilling over banks in winter.
Camellia
Glossy evergreen bushes with red, pink or white flowers from late winter. The flowers drop whole.

Spiny bushes covered in yellow, coconut-scented flowers on heaths and cliffs. Some is in flower in almost any month.
Flowering quince
Red, coral or white cups on thorny bare stems early in spring. Cut branches are used in East Asian arrangements.
Forsythia
Bare stems covered in yellow before the leaves. The first bright colour of spring in Korea and across temperate gardens.

Pincushion
Round orange and red heads of stiff curved styles, on shrubs of the South African Cape. A long-lasting cut flower.

Small sky-blue cups. A Californian wildflower, sown by the million on the hills of Hitachi Seaside Park in Japan.

Hibiscus (gudhal)
Wide red flowers that last a day, on hedges all year in the tropics. Offered to Kali and Ganesha. Malaysia's national flower.

Light, scentless orange flowers strung into hair garlands in South India, often together with jasmine.
Madagascar periwinkle (sadabahar)
Pink or white five-petalled flowers on a small plant that never seems to stop. Its Hindi name means always in spring.

Yellow funnels among narrow leaves on a roadside shrub. Offered to Shiva in India. All parts are poisonous.
